  • The duration of a match is three minutes with an allowance of extra two minutes for an extension of the match.
  • When the match cannot be decided by an extension, further extensions will follow.
  • Ippon-shobu is a match that is decided by one valid stroke.
  • Sanbon-shobu is a match that is decided by the first player to gain two points.
  • In an Ippon-shobu, an aiuchi means both sides lose. In a sanbon-shobu, a first aiuchi gives one point to each side. If there is a second aiuchi, both sides will lose.
  • In each category, players fight with the same weapons.
  • In deciding the grand champion, champions from each category fight in tournament style(ippon-shobu) with choken -free.
  • The match area is a rectangle with six to seven meters on each side.
  • Each match is decided by an ippon-shobu. The finals can be decided by sanbon-shobu.
  • When kabaite is called the player being warned against Kabaite must carry on the match without the use of Kabaite again.
